A new method for the estimate of H0 from quadruply imaged gravitational lens systems

چکیده
We present a new method to estimate the Hubble constant H0 from the measured time delays in quadruply imaged gravitational lens systems. We show how it is possible to get an estimate of H0 without the need to completely reconstruct the lensing potential thus avoiding any a priori hypothesis on the expression of the galaxy lens model. Our method only needs to assume that the lens potential may be expressed as rF (θ), whatever the shape function F (θ) is, and it is thus able to fully explore the degeneracy in the mass models taking also into account the presence of an external shear. We test the method on simulated cases and show that it does work well in recovering the correct value of the slope α of the radial profile and of the Hubble constantH0. Then, we apply the same method to the real quadruple lenses PG1115+080 and B1422+231 obtaining H0 = 58 +17 −15 km s −1 Mpc (68

Gravitational lensing potential reconstruction in quadruply imaged systems
We develop a semi-analytical method to reconstruct the lensing potential in quadruply imaged gravitational lens systems. Assuming that the potential belongs to a broad class of boxy non elliptical models, we show how it is possible to write down a system of equations which can be numerically solved to recover the potential parameters directly from image positions and using physical constraints....
متن کاملLens modelling and H0 estimate in quadruply lensed systems
We present a numerical method to estimate the lensing parameters and the Hubble constant H0 from quadruply imaged gravitational lens systems. The lens galaxy is modeled using both separable deflection potentials and constant mass to light ratio profiles, while possible external perturbations have been taken into account introducing an external shear. The model parameters are recovered inverting...
متن کاملGravitational Lenses : Recent Results
The 0, 1 and 2 derivatives of a “Fermat potential” give the three D’s of gravitational lensing: delay, deflection and distortion. Observations of these delays, deflections and distortions for doubly and quadruply imaged quasars give estimates of Hubble’s constant, H0. The single largest contribution to the uncertainty in H0 arises from the difficulty in constraining the degree of central concen...
متن کاملEstimation of multiple time delays in complex gravitational lens systems
We generalize the nonparametric dispersion minimization method of time delay estimation for the case when more than two quasar images are available. This allows us to analyse time delays in complex gravitational lens systems in a model independent manner. We apply the new method to the recent observations of the quadruply imaged quasar PG 1115+080 and show that our nonparametric estimates rough...
متن کاملClass B1152]199 and B1359]154 : Two New Gravitational Lens Systems Discovered in the Cosmic Lens All-sky Survey
The third phase of the Cosmic Lens All-Sky Survey (CLASS) has recently been completed, bringing the total number of sources imaged to over 15,000 in the CLASS and Jodrell-VLA Astrometric Survey combined survey. In the VLA observations carried out in 1998 March and April, two new candidate lensed systems were discovered : CLASS B1152]199 and B1359]154. B1152]199 is a double, with 1A.6 a backgrou...
